Portraits

Piers' portraits show unarguably what a talented painter he was. He preferred to paint from life and subjects he had a connection with, family and close friends, so undertook few commissions.

Figurative Prints

Piers drypoint prints (for which the artist draws directly on the plate with a scribing tool) display his skill and confidence as a draughtsman and often appear to have a wonderful velvety texture. The Landscape Near Ely won a prize at the Eastern Open in Kings Lynn in 1991. He would only take two or three prints from each plate because he said that after that the burr raised by the scriber became too flattened by the printing process and the texture was lost. It was partly because of this that he also produced etchings, for which the number of prints is virtually limitless, and experimented with aquatint.

Abstract Prints

Much of Piers' work blurs the boundaries between abstract and figurative. Some of the figurative prints present their subjects in an abstract way. His abstracts include natural shapes and have depth so that, as with the abstract paintings, the viewer finds objects and figures emerging within them.

Abstract Paintings

Piers abstract paintings show the deep understanding of colour and form that he gained from many years of figurative painting and drawing. The viewer finds him or her self attempting to resolve them into natural objects, figures and buildings. They repay repeat viewings by revealing new aspects. Often there isn't a 'right way up' and Piers would display them in his studio in each orientation as he tried to decide which way worked best. He preferred painting on board or on paper although some of these are on canvas - always short of cash he would use whatever he could find that was suitable.
